Winter Seamless: Brushed-Back Fabrics for Cold-Weather Lines
Every autumn the same search spike arrives: warm leggings, brushed leggings, fleece-lined. Here is how the warm versions are actually built on seamless machines — and the calendar you need to hit Q4 with them.
Quick answer: Winter seamless is made by knitting a heavier tube (260–320 GSM) and mechanically brushing the inside to raise an insulating pile (“brushed-back” or “peached interior”), or by knitting waffle/thermal structures that trap air. It keeps the squat-proof density of a performance legging while adding real warmth. To sell it in Q4, samples should be approved by early September and bulk booked by late September.
What “brushed-back” actually is
The fabric is knitted first, then run through a brushing machine that abrades the inner face into a soft micro-pile. The pile traps air — that is the insulation — while the smooth outer face keeps a clean athletic look and normal print/logo behaviour. On seamless circular machines this is done on the finished tube, so the garment keeps its knit-in shaping with no extra seams.

The three winter builds
| Build | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Brushed-back interlock | Dense double knit, brushed interior | Winter leggings & sets, 260–300 GSM |
| Waffle / thermal knit | 3D cell structure traps air | Base layers, lounge sets, tops |
| Heavy rib + brush | Ribbed texture with peached inside | Premium winter sets, visible texture |
All three are knit structures, not laminates — so they stay stretchy, breathable and machine-washable. True “fleece-lined” (a separate bonded liner) is a cut-and-sew construction; for seamless programs, brushed-back achieves the warmth with less bulk. Structure options and machine detail are covered in seamless knitting technology.
What to spec for warmth without bulk
Warmth comes from trapped air, so spec GSM plus structure, not GSM alone: a 280 GSM brushed interlock outperforms a 320 GSM flat knit. Keep 22–26% spandex for recovery, choose deeper winter colourways (dark shades also read more opaque), and note that brushing slightly lowers surface abrasion resistance — require a pilling test (ISO 12945, grade 4+) on the brushed face. Moisture behaviour still matters for winter training — see how wicking works.
The Q4 calendar (the part brands miss)
Winter product sells October–January, which means: develop in August, approve samples by early September, book bulk by late September for sea freight, or mid-October if you can carry air cost on first drops. Miss that window and you are launching warm leggings in January markdown season. A 7–10 day sample loop makes an August start comfortable.
How Yesseam builds winter lines
We run brushed-back interlock and waffle programs on the same seamless platforms as our core leggings and sets — same blocks, winter fabric — so a proven summer silhouette can become a Q4 style in one sample round.
FAQ
Are brushed-back leggings warm enough for outdoor winter training?
For running and gym-to-street in mild-to-cold conditions, yes — the pile plus a 260–300 GSM knit is the standard winter-legging build. For sub-zero static wear you would layer them under shells; they are a base-plus layer, not an insulated pant.
Brushed-back vs fleece-lined — what is the difference?
Brushed-back raises a pile from the knit itself; fleece-lined bonds or sews a separate fleece layer inside a shell fabric. Brushed keeps more stretch and less bulk and suits seamless; fleece-lined is warmer but heavier and is a cut-and-sew construction.
What GSM should winter leggings be?
260–320 GSM for brushed seamless builds. Below ~250 the pile thins the effective density; above ~320 you trade mobility for warmth that most training use cases do not need.
Do brushed fabrics pill more?
The brushed face is slightly more abrasion-prone than a flat face, which is why we spec a pilling test on the inside face and denser yarns for the outer. A quality brushed interlock at grade 4+ holds up through normal wash cycles.
